November Love

I absolutely love November!!! Why? It holds my favorite holiday....Thanksgiving!!

This is the time of year my family goes all out. We usually have two different types of turkeys, a room filled with sides, another room filled with desserts, with everyone sharing in the cooking and cleaning duties. My mother started a tradition years before she passed . After dinner, everyone would express what they were thankful for. As my family grows, I find myself wanting to not only continue this tradition with my children, but also start a tradition of my own. So I asked myself, "How can I instill a heart of gratitude in my children?"
I though of the perfect, age appropriate project. I bought a pumpkin and decided we would decorate it as a family, covering it with gratitude. I know, it sounds weird so let me explain. Every day in November, I had everyone in my family (we improvised with Jase) write something on the pumpkin they were thankful for. Not only do you verbally express your gratitude, its a visual reminder as well. By the end of the month the pumpkin should be completely covered :)

A Matter of Perception

I woke up today feeling defeated. I felt lost, drained and just plain tired. I forgot how exhausting it is to care for a newborn. Between the feedings, diaper changes, and periodic checks to see if they're still breathing, I find myself going a little crazy. In one hand, I'm completely in love with everything about my son but on another hand, I find myself wishing he didn't need me so much.
As I sit here at noon in my pajamas in full reflection, I'm reminded of the age old adage, "A mothers work is never done." And then it hits me. That's it...that's what's wrong!! I'm viewing my service to my child as work. As true as that statement is, its terribly one sided. Yes, motherhood is hard and yes it requires a great deal of work at times. But if my only perception is work, then that thought process will assuredly lead to frustration. With every good job, there is a defined work schedule, duties, and salary. But with motherhood, the schedule is always, the duties are extensive, and there is no salary.
The adage, "A mothers love is never ending" is more applicable to my service for my child(ren). It is love, and only love, that will allow me to go over and above the call of duty, work without rest or repayment.  Love will allow me to view my duties as acts of love, even when my service leaves me in my pajamas at noon!

Maternity Fashion

When I found out I was pregnant for the second time, I decided I did not want to look anything like I did the first time I was pregnant. I hated the maternity clothing I wore with my first son. I felt frumpy and unattractive every time I got dressed. I also decided that I did not want to spend money on a wardrobe that I was only going to use for nine months. I was able to go my entire pregnancy wearing my normal wardrobe, only buying two pairs of maternity shorts. The following is a video of some of the outfits I wore during my pregnancy. Enjoy!!

FYI: Jersey skirts, Maxi and Empire-waisted dresses are great because they stretch as you grow!!

Meal Train

meal Train - Meal Calendar for New Mothers, Surgery, Illness, and More

After the birth of my second son, some of the women from my church wanted to organize meals for me and my family until I recovered. One of the ladies sent me an email to sign up for a website called "meal Train." After signing up and exploring the website, I completely fell in love with meal train. This website is the perfect tool to help individuals simplify the organization of giving and receiving meals for friends or family after a birth, surgery, or illness.

The following is a list of perks the website provides that makes scheduling easier:
  • Interactive, online meal calendar
  • Customized calendar dates, times and meal preferences
  • Invitations via email, and Facebook
  • Reminder emails prior to the scheduled meal delivery
I really enjoyed the online meal calendar. I was able to log on each night and find out who was providing dinner and what they were providing, with no surprises. Instead of meals, some of the members also opted to provide groceries to help keep our refrigerator and pantry stocked. Hopefully this information is helpful to you, your family or your friends :)

Hola Dear Deer

I grew up watching my parents start successful businesses. I also watched my mother make every craft and baked good under the sun. She frequently enlisted our services to help sell her products. So it was only natural for me to not only start my own business selling cakes but to also support local businesses, especially those owned by women.

The first business I would like to spotlight is Hola Dear Deer. Hola Dear Deer is based in Houston, TX and is owned by two sisters, Erika Del Valle and Jessica Garcia. As the daughters of a talented tailor, the girls' childhood was surrounded by fabric and the sounds of sewing machines. After many years of admiring handmade items, they decided to keep the family tradition alive by starting their own business. Some of their creative designs include t-shirts, mini-wallets, superhero capes, hand bags, bowties, pouches and yarn spheres. Their use of up cycled and vintage materials result in unique eco-friendly products.
